Trimingham Pottery Studio

Client Brief

Our client had developed a growing passion for pottery but found herself limited by working in a small, uninsulated shed. She approached us looking for a major upgrade — a dedicated space that would allow her to fully explore her craft and accommodate the specialist equipment required.

To meet her needs, we designed and built a garden room with reinforced foundations and a polished concrete floor, capable of supporting the weight of a kiln and pottery equipment. The floor was not only engineered for strength but also for practicality — low-maintenance, easy to clean, and perfectly suited to the demands of a working pottery studio.

We clad the studio in a combination of western red cedar and metal sheeting to match their existing property.

Challenges & Solutions

This garden room needed planning permission for two reasons!

  • Firstly, the property is located in a conservation area, meaning that you cannot build outbuildings to the side of the main dwelling under normal permitted development rights.

  • Secondly, our customers were keen to maximise the ceiling height inside the garden room, so we built  the structure to an external height of 2.8m at the front elevation.

  • Read Garden Rooms completed the planning application to Norfolk Norfolk District Council and full approval was given!
